What Summer Means For Your Asphalt Parking Lot

The summer heat is upon us, and it’s not going anywhere for quite a while. This can have a lot of pros and cons to your lot, but luckily not too many cons. Like most of the southwest, our summers get very dry and very, very hot. El Paso has seen some of its warmest days already, with temperatures hitting over 100 degrees in early June. So, what should you be thinking about when it comes to the heat and your parking lot?

What The Summer Does To Your Asphalt

So, there are things that you just cannot sometimes control when it comes to your asphalt. The effect the heat has on it can cause some wear and tear that is inevitable, but with some upkeep and maintenance, they’re going to be simple tasks.

Worn Lines Across Your Lot

The striping on your lot is essential since it must meet ADA compliance, highlight fire lanes, and let customers know where to park. UV rays from the sun can quickly fade these lines making it difficult for anyone to know where they can park as they pull up.

Weakened Pavement = Cracks, Potholes, and More

Once UV rays really begin to take effect on your pavement, water can seep into the foundation and take some severe damage. This can also lead to cracks and potholes with the fluctuation in temperatures. In addition, the already rigid pavement will buckle when put under high temperatures. So, planning out your summer and fall maintenance will save you in the long run.

Water Damage

Weather patterns will vary during the summer, and our region tends to get less frequent but much heavier rainfall during this time. Not only can it seep into the pavement, as we mentioned earlier, but there are other factors to consider. If you don’t have proper drainage systems installed, then standing water will build in various spots across your lot. The longer these puddles sit then the more damage they can do to your foundation.
