Residential Versus Commercial
When pouring asphalt, the thickness of the pavement and its drainage are what you need to be mindful of when doing residential and commercial lots. Parking lots for business or commercial properties need to be large and have the ability to withstand a lot of weight. Residential properties don’t need to be as durable as commercial lots, but still need to be able to stand the test of time. Read below for what is needed in asphalt paving for both types of lots.
Residential
Regardless of the paving you’re doing, asphalt would be nothing without its base. For a home driveway, you want it to be smooth yet firm and even. On top of the subgrade, you want roughly 6 to 8 inches of compacted granular for the base. Then, for the asphalt itself, you should have between 2 and 3 inches thick; 2 inches being the minimum.
Commercial
Commercial lots require a little more thinking when it comes to asphalt paving. If the parking lot is for heavy-duty vehicles, that may require a little more durability compared to if it’s going to be a retail store parking lot.
For a standard lot, you want a densely-graded base that is roughly 8 inches thick. On top of the base, a professional would then recommend about 3 inches of asphalt, followed by a 1.5-inch layer of dense stone. For heavier traffic, put down about 2 inches of stone.
For the finish, you want another 1.5-inch layer of smaller stone, which would make that thickness a total of 3 inches. For a heavier lot, you want a 2-inch layer of stone, bringing the thickness to 4 inches.
